Environment and Sustainability

Heavily crtisised for its lack of sustainability and environmental impacts, the mining industry is changing by adopting new strategies and technologies that better incorporate environmental and social sustainability as a priority area in the design and operation within the entire mine cycle. Gecamin conferences related to this area include:

International Seminar on Social Responsibility in Mining
This seminar is held every two years. The first Srmining was held in October 2011 in Santiago, Chile and was organised by Gecamin in conjunction with The Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining, Sustainable Minerals Institute, The University of Queensland, Australia. The technical programme included 90 presentations by authors representing 28 countries. Delegates from 102 mining companies were among the 515 participants who attended.

International Seminar on Environmental Issues in the Mining Industry
This seminar is held every two years. The most recent version was held in November 2011 in Santiago, Chile, and was organised by Gecamin in conjunction with The Centre for Mined Land Rehabilitation, Sustainable Minerals Institute, The University of Queensland, Australia. The technical programme included 56 presentations by authors representing 16 countries. Delegates from 37 mining companies were among the 255 participants who attended.

In addition to the seminars previously mentioned, Gecamin has organised events in Chile and internationally that are held periodically in different host countries. This applies to:

9th International Conference on Clean Technologies for the Mining Industry
This conference is held every three years. The ninth and most recent version was held in April 2011 in Santiago, Chile, and was organised with the Department of Metallurgical Engineering of the Universidad de Concepción. The technical programme included 54 presentations by authors representing 18 countries. Delegates from 28 mining companies were among the 192 participants who attended.

5th International Conference on Mine Closure
This conference was initiated by the Australian Centre of Geomechanics and the Centre for Land Rehabilitation, both part of the University of Western Australia. It is held annually and the host country alternates between Australia, South Africa, Canada and Chile. The fifth and most recent version was held in November 2010 in Viña del Mar, Chile, and was organised by Gecamin and the aforementioned Australian centres. The technical programme included 67 presentations by authors representing 27 countries. Delegates from 64 mining companies were among the 302 participants who attended.
