Quechua Indigenous Community of Huatacondo and mining company Teck Quebrada Blanca to present together at Srmining 2015 conference.

The aim of their presentation entitled “Due diligence and dialogue: An early engagement case between the Quechua Indigenous Community of Huatacondo and Teck Quebrada Blanca” is to encourage a constructive dialogue and understanding between the community and the mining company.

The 3rd International Conference on Social Responsibility in Mining, Srmining 2015, which will take place between November 4 and 6 in Hotel Enjoy Antofagasta, will be an opportunity to share knowledge and experience on the topics of social responsibility and sustainable development. One of the plenary sessions featured in the technical program is a joint presentation between the Quechua Indigenous Community of Huatacondo and the mining company Teck Quebrada Blanca. 

The aim of the paper “Due diligence and dialogue: An early engagement case between the Quechua Indigenous Community of Huatacondo and Teck Quebrada Blanca”, which was written by the mining company, is to encourage a constructive dialogue and understanding between the community and the mining company so as to maintain a long-term mutually beneficial relationship. In March 2015, an agreement was signed to continue to develop, in a sustainable way, the current Quebrada Blanca expansion project and so that it is compatible with the interests and rights of Huatacondo.

The plenary session will bring together Mauricio Hidalgo, President of the Quechua Indigenous Community of Huatacondo; Alonso Barros, Lawyer for the Community and Patricio Pinto who is Director of Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Affairs for Teck Quebrada Blanca.

The preliminary program of Srmining 2015 includes over 60 papers by authors from 20 countries including Australia, Canada, Peru and South Africa. 

Srmining 2015, which is organized by The Sustainable Minerals Institute of the University of Queensland, Australia and Gecamin, will be chaired by Francisco J. Veloso, Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Antofagasta Minerals. The Co-Chair is Deanna Kemp, Deputy Director of the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining at The Sustainable Minerals Institute, The University of Queensland, Australia.
