Innovation regarding mining tailings marks the Tailings 2013 programme

A total of 49 presentations from 14 countries as well as a discussion panel that will analyse the behaviour of dams during the 2010 earthquake make up the technical programme for the First International Seminar on Tailings Management.

Presentations related to successful experiments aimed at optimising the management of tailings deposits form part of the First International Seminar on Tailings Management, Tailings 2013, which will bring together professionals and experts to discuss these issues from 28-30 August at the Sheraton Hotel in Santiago, Chile.

The seminar’s technical programme includes 49 presentations from 14 countries, 6 plenary talks, one short course prior to the seminar as well as a discussion panel. The panel will analyse the behaviour of tailings dams during the Feburary 27th, 2010 earthquake in Chile.

One of the keynote presentations will discuss the positive results of the new tailings deposit in Mountain Pass California, USA by Molycorp Minerals LLC. The company has designed a tailings management system to process and store 20 million tonnes of tailings with a production rate of up to 1,800 tonnes per day.

Another presentation will address the issue of outsourcing tailings operations. The Quillayes tailings deposit for the Pelambres copper mine, which lasted 10 years, will be discussed.

With the aim of improving the efficiency of tailings operations the presenation “On-line measurement of rheological parameters for feedback control of thickeners” can also be highlighted.

Tailings is the first seminar that will bring together professionals and experts in the area to discuss these themes amongst others related to tailings disposal and management. The meeting is organised by Gecamin and the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of British Columbia. The seminar is presided by Constantino Suazo, Metallurgy Manager at Cía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi, Chile.
