Presentations describing concrete experiences and lessoned learned in the field of some of the most important mining projects in the world made up the 3rd International Seminar on Geology for the Mining Industry, Geomin 2013, and the 3rd International Seminar on Mine Planning, Mineplanning 2013.
Nearly 300 participants gathered for the parallel meetings which boasted a technical programme complete with 73 presentations from 13 countries. The presentations included experiences and studies marked by innovation, eight plenary talks and two short courses.
According to Julio Beniscelli, the seminars’ technical coordinator, there was a nice balance between papers presented on open-pit and underground mining. “The technical programme is worth mentioning as we had presentations related to projects and operations from several companies including Codelco Chile and Newcrest from Australia. These presentations shared enriching lessons based on their experiences.
Beniscelli also indicated that there were interesting contributions in the areas of planning and optimisation of the mining business and new tools that are being developed we shared.
Finally, the tecnical coordinator noted that another important conclusion to be drawn from the discussion is the need for competent and skilled geologists and mine planners. “In this sense Gecamin has a lot to contribute, organising these high quality technical conferences.”
The seminars were organised by Gecamin and the Mining Optimisation Laboratory at the University of Alberta, Canada with the institutional collaboration from McGill University, Canada. Presiding Geomin and Mineplanning repectively were Octavio Areneda, Vice-president of Operations for Codelco’s Central-South Region and Manuel Durán, Independent Consultant from Chile.
