We were very excited to initiate the series of international seminars on social responsibility in mining and host the first one in Chile. One of the aims of the SRMINING seminar was to promote an exchange of knowledge and ideas between industry practitioners and researchers working in the field of mining and social responsibility. It was gratifying, therefore, to see both groups so well represented in this extraordinary technical programme that was put together thanks to the efforts of the authors, reviewers and committees.

Also pleasing was the geographical spread of authors and delegates, with 33 countries and numerous companies and research institutions represented. Mining is now well and truly a global industry and the opportunities forsharing experiences and learnings are many, as this seminar and the associated proceedings so amply demonstrate.

During the two full days of technical sessions the delegates were able to hear over 100 presentations that debated key issues in social responsibility, including SR standards, corporate governance and management systems, multi-stakeholder processes and

governance, community and stakeholder engagement, community investment and development, community and environment, community conflicts and grievances, human rights and mining, indigenous peoples and indigenous rights, supply chain management, measurement and monitoring of social performance.

The experience and expertise that authors and delegates have shared with us add substantially to our knowledge base about social challenges facing the contemporary mining industry and of how companies are endeavouring to address these challenges. Your valuable contributions provide an important voice in steering advances in SR research and practice and help us to define an agenda for future work in this critically important area.

We trust you enjoyed your stay in Chile and took full advantage of the technical sessions and networking opportunities offered during the seminar.  We hope that with your support and enthusiasm the SRMINING seminar series will become a wonderful long-lasting tradition. We look forward to seeing you at the next seminar in 2013!
