Professors
Raúl Espinace Abarzúa, earned a doctorate in Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM); he has also completed studies in Construction Engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV); Highway Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) in Spain, and has an International Diploma in Sysmic Engineering from the Universidad Autónoma de México.
Dr. Espinace Abarzúa is a Full Profesor Titular at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso and the Universidad Católica de Chile. Previously he was a professor at the Universidad de Chile and the Federico Santa María. He has also been an invited professor and conference speaker at universities and international organizations. At the PUCV Dr. Espinace Abarzúa is the founder and Director of the Geotechnical Group, from 1983 to the present.
He has served as the director, as well as a researcher of varios projects I+D+i in geotechnics and mining including projects on massive mineral deposits for the prestigious funding organizations, Fondecyt, Fondef and Corfo Innova, for which he has received international prizes. Dr. Espinace Abarzúa is the author of numerous publications in leading journals and the proceedings of national and international conferences..
He is a member of the Chilean, Spanish, and International versions of the Mechanics of Floors and Foundations Society, and other engineering organizations. He was a member of the Consulting Council of Conama for two terms.
Dr. Espinace Abarzúa is the Executive Director and Principal partner of the company Geotecnia Ambiental with his ample experience consulting in the areas of Geotechnics, Environment, Mining, Technology Transfers and University Business relations. He has consulted for state instutions such as SERNAGEOMIN; Servicio de Salud, Conama and Enami, among others.
His company has developed a number of design projects and directed the control of operations in various massive mineral deposits. Currently technological innovations in various mining projects are being applied to these deposits to contribute to the generation of new norms for the operations of tailings deposits.
Gabriel Villavicencio Arancibia, earned his doctórate in Engineering, with a concentration in Civil Engineering from the Université Blaise Pascal, in France. He also studied Construction Engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV); Dr. Villavicencio Arancibia is an Associate Professor at the PUCV. He has been a researcher of I+D+i projects, in the areas of geotechnics and mining, such as the Project "Propsotion of projects of norms to optimise the operations process and qualiquty control in tailings reservoirs, supported by Corfo Innova.
He has been invited as a conference speaker in Universitiy and national organisations. He is a member of the Geotecnics Group at the PUCV.
Dr. Villavicencio Arancibia is the autor of publications related to geotechnics and mining, including in published in ISI journals and in the proceedings of national and international Congresses.
Currently he is a member of the Chilean soceity of Geotecnics. He is a consulting engineer at the company Geotecnia Ambiental and the Laboratory LEPUCV S.A, with ample experience is matters related to geotecnics.

The course is directed to professionals and technicians, with or without experience, who are responsible for the operation of the tailings deposits in national and international mining projects. Also the course is directed to those executives that would like to implement this kind of work at their sites, directors of operations and geotechnical supervisors of tailings deposits.

Joachim Vogdt is the General Manager of the Engineering and Environemtnal Consulting Group IASA (including subsidiary companies Proambiente, Proceanic, progresa, IASA Australia and Germany). He received his degree as an Environmental Engineer, M.Sc. at the Polytechnic Institute of Virginia & State University, USA. He has 20 years of experience in waste water treatment design, industrial solid waste management, contaminated site evaluation and environmental audits, including mine operations and mine closure projects. As a part time researcher, he has also cooperated in several investigation projects of the IAR RWTH Aachen and KIT Research Centre (Germany), all related to sustainable development, resource efficiency, integrated waste and wastewater management.
Suzanne Lynch-Watson
General Manager – Consulting, Metso PTI
Suzanne Lynch-Watson is the General Manager of Consulting at Metso Minerals Process Technology & Innovation in Australia. She received her BE (Chem, Hons 1) from the University of Qld. She worked initially in engineering design and construction for 10 years and gained experience in mineral processing and oil & gas design projects at all stages from prefeasibility through to commissioning. She has spent the past 13 years working as a comminution specialist. Her role with Metso PTI is to manage a group of consultants located all over the globe, to provide consulting services to clients in the mining industry, including conducting mine to mill projects which focus on optimising the whole comminution chain from the pit to the final concentrate. This involves site work to assess and sample plants, data analysis including simulation and benchmarking, and training.
Roberto Valle
Manager Latin America – Metso PTI
Roberto Valle manages the PTI centres in Peru, Chile and Mexico. He received his BE (Met. Eng. Hons 1) from the University of Trujillo, Peru. In addition, he obtained an MBA and a specialisation in Project Management in ESAN University, Peru. He worked initially as a process engineer, operations, researching and process development for different mining companies. Apart from his industrial experience, he took part in delivering several training courses related with Process Technology in Brisbane Australia, Metso York Industries, Pennsylvania-USA and in Sorocaba Brazil. He is responsible for all the process integration and optimisation projects as well as the PTI products and systems in Latin America.
