Energy efficiency and renewable energies lead the debate at Enermin 2016

The 3rd International Seminar on Energy Management in Mining, Enermin 2016, brought together mining and energy leaders from the 24 through 26 of August.

Professionals and experts in the energy and mining sector met at the 3rd International Seminar on Energy Management in Mining, Enermin 2016, which took place the 24 through 26 of August at the Hotel Grand Hyatt Santiago. There were more than 21 technical presentations from Argentina, Chile, Canada, Germany, Italy, Peru and Uruguay as well as 14 plenary presentations and a panel discussion.

The main topics that drew participant attention were energy efficiency and non-conventional renewable energy incorporation as the bases for cleaner and more efficient energy in the long term.

“Energy efficiency has become quite the relevant topic and I think it’s super important that it has been discussed so much despite diverse opinions. But I recognize that energy efficiency as a topic has grown more important in all the opportunities that arise with respect to mining”, affirmed Guillermo Jiménez, Enermin 2016 Co-Chair and Director of the Center of Energy and Faculty of Science and Mathematics at the Universidad de Chile.

“I’m also interested in the opportunities available from integrating renewable energy in the mining industry. Even more so, considering that Northern Chile has significant solar potential, “ he added.

The seminar chair and General Manager of Pattern Energy, Nicolás Caussade, mentioned that “the debate was well established and the tension between the mining industry and the energy industry to lower costs versus the contracts that can be currently offered. Not to mention the need for efficient energy, which is something that mining has been slowly considering. Enermin is a meeting point between both worlds, which is a very positive aspect “

Similarly, the technical coordinator of the event and Technical Manager of Energía Llaima, René Canello, valued the contribution the seminar “gives to the mining companies in terms of different tools that better use energy as well as having more efficient operational and business management.”

A distinguished guest of the seminar was Joaquín Villarino, Executive Director of Consejo Minero (Chilean Mining Council), who affirmed that Enermin represents a “space for insightful and thoughtful conversation” with “technically sound discussions that leave no room to doubt that it contributes to better public policy and commercial decision development for the mining industry as well as the energy sector.”
